Monday evening I had a late night work session in Blackpool so I nipped into Lytham Crematorium for a mooch. As soon as I arrived I picked up the Ring-necked Parakeets – there were at least 8 of them and possibly more. It looks like someone has put up a bird box for them too. A family of Mistle Thrushes were feeding between the grave stones and at least five juvenile Great Spotted Woodpeckers entertained enormously. I saw the slightly unusual sight of one perched on top of a grave stone out in the open and three together chased each other continually around the trunks of trees over what looked like half an egg shell! A Little Owl put in an appearance and was promptly mobbed – also seen were Jay and Nuthatch. I also nipped over to Fairhaven Lake and scanned the beach. Nothing of great interest – two sleeping Sandwich Terns being the best sighting.

Tuesday morning at HGF the highlight was a Kestrel being half-heartedly mobbed by a flock of around 25 Linnets. I had a quick mooch to the Moat Lane pools after work. On pool 1 were the usual Mute Swan, 7 Coots and a Moorhen plus five Little Ringed Plovers (adult plus 4 juveniles). By the time I walked round to pool 2 there were 2 juvenile LRP’s here – not sure whether they are different birds or the pool 1 birds flitting around. Two Great Spotted Woodpeckers flew over. Late evening a quick visit to Newton Lake produced the usual 3 Green Sandpipers with a Kingfisher flying low over the pool and two Little Grebes and 6 Teal at the back of the pool.
