Yellow-legged Gulls, Albert Village Lake
11th January
35+ Goldfinches were on the feeders in the garden this morning and 2 Reed Buntings were feeding at the back of the garden. After that I was on the road, working away again, and thus had an opportunity to call in at Albert Village Lake.
When I arrived there were several hundred large gulls already on the water plus a few on the bank arguing over some bread. An adult Yellow-legged Gull was stood in this group. Unfortunately some walkers soon spooked them back into the water.
Demographics have changed a bit since my last visit with the majority of the birds being adult Lesser Black-backed Gulls, very few Herrings and few juveniles. I did pick out four Yellow-legged Gulls with some patience, all adults. Scarily there were some very smart, clean and bright looking presumed argentatus Herring Gulls around too and a couple of birds which were not for showing their full suite of features. No sign of any Caspians or the adult Glauc. Most of the birds on the tip stayed there and flew off, presumably to Foremark, late in the afternoon. I decided to nip over to Foremark only to find that the gates are locked at 4pm - no chance of viewing the gull roost. Barking decision by the local council.
