A little tale I forgot to mention from last week. One day (can’t remember which one) I visited Moat Lane to check on the terns. As soon as I got out of the car I heard the usual racket the terns make while mobbing someone or something. I looked over towards the pools and a Kestrel was hovering over pool 2 almost exactly where the 2 chicks were. The adults went bananas and really gave the Kestrel what for – it then disappeared. Almost immediately afterwards two Buzzards appeared from behind the trees and also took up station over pool 2. The terns split up and picked a Buzzard each – the large raptors soon seemed to get fed up of the noise and drifted off over the mosses. As soon as they had gone back came the Kestrel – this time it didn’t hover and flew off over pool 1. At which point I noticed the Sparrowhawk now spiralling up over pool 2……A busy morning for the terns!
