Friday 8th April

Visited Rixton after work on a nice sunny evening. Quite a few warblers on Moat Lane including Willow Warbler, Chiffchaff and Blackcap. On the tip pool a single Green Sandpiper was still present along with a Redshank. I also found two Tree Sparrows in the hedge at the bottom of Prospect Lane near the farm – I wonder if there is a little colony here? On the mosses I picked up a Red-legged Partridge near to the place I saw one with young last year. 9 Wheatears were also in the ploughed fields off Prospect and Holly Bush Lanes. Also there were 4 Stock Doves and 16 Linnets.

HGF this evening was relatively quiet. A pair of Black-necked Grebes still there with 2 Little Ringed Plovers and a Common Sandpiper feeding along the muddy edge. I am becoming concerned about the amount of water extraction here now. United Utilities have dropped the water level by around 10-12 feet based on the original water level. In the garden this evening were 9 Tree Sparrows and a Yellowhammer.

Saturday 9th April

Had a wander over to Bull Beck, Caton this morning. There was a small cloud of around 130 Sand Martins flitting around the river – they kept flying up into a ball! Various warblers heard singing or seen and 2 Redshanks and a couple of Goosanders on the river plus a fly by Kingfisher. Later I did the usual walk by the river at Halton. Dipper, Goosander and Kingfisher all seen plus lots of warblers heard singing – double figures in Chiffers! 2 Ravens flew over the van later on.

Sunday 10th April

Managed to get out for a couple of hours mid afternoon so I went to Leighton Moss. A Marsh Tit was showing spectacularly well by one of the paths – when I pressed the camera shutter on my DSLR it was dead! I plonked myself down in one of the hides (can’t remember the name) where a pair of Garganey had been seen. Typically no one had seen them for several hours. A couple sat next to me and the woman asked me if the Garganey was around. Apparently not I replied then put my bins up and immediately spotted the pair! A Red Deer also had a wander round here. At Lillian’s Hide a second summer Mediterranean Gull showed very nicely. Finally from the road above the reserve I watched a female Sparrowhawk plus a pair of Marsh Harriers flying over the reed beds!
