November 12th

Started this morning with a trip to Sizergh. Within five minutes of arriving I was watching one Hawfinch feeding in a tree behind the cafĂ©. Three other distant birds which were probably Hawfinches but not seen clearly enough were also seen. A male Bullfinch, a Raven, two Nuthatches and various raptors also appeared in a short space of time. However my birding was to be short lived this morning and I couldn’t linger.

Mid afternoon while walking along the front at Morecambe with Karen I spotted three Scaup off Broadway and also two drake Goldeneyes.

Late afternoon I nipped over to Melling to see if the Bewick’s Swan was still around. It wasn’t but the seven adult Whoopers were still there. I then headed back to Hornby and while stood looking at the weir on the River Wenning, I saw something very strange. Seemingly from nowhere a large Salmon jumped out of the pool and landed on the bank at the right hand side of the river (looking upriver). It flapped around a lot but couldn’t get back into the water and eventually lay still, lying in a very shallow puddle on the concrete.

I ran down, took a couple of quick photos and then put the fish back. The salmon had landed around ten feet from the weir itself so either it was chased out of the water (I didn’t see an Otter) or it had very mistimed its jump up the weir. Just a thought – is it poaching if the fish jumps out to you? I was never going to do anything other than put it back by the way! The fish was very large – on the zoom photo you can just see some tree leaves (Alder I think) at the top which gives you an idea of the size of this fish. I would estimate it was well over 2 feet long and probably a migrating hen.

Later a Tawny Owl was again calling near the van.
