Rixton delight
Photos:
Corn Bunting, Yellowhammer (female) and male and female Wheatears at Rixton Moss
1st April
HGF was again quiet this morning - no hirundines at all. The Chiffchaff is still singing and two Blackcaps were doing likewise. One was in the eastern hedge where they always tend to go, the other was in the south hedge which is unusual.
I visited Rixton again this morning. Two Wheatears were present around the wood pile - a male and a female so perhaps new birds. I also saw at least 7 Corn Buntings, a couple of Yellowhammers and at least 25 Skylarks. Two fields at the bottom of Holly Bush Lane seemed to be lifting with them.
A Sparrowhawk was being mobbed over Winwick by corvids late morning.
This evening I went back to HGF and just plonked myself down on the north bank in the evening sun. The two Redshanks were observed mating and then two Little Ringed Plovers arrived and flew circuits over the pool, calling all the time. While watching them I picked up a high Sand Martin passing through.
