2 male Bramblings in the garden yesterday

The garden this morning - Albert was being sensible for once and had retired indoors.

Got up this morning and looked out of the window - everything was white. As usual when it snows - the country went to pieces. The drive to work was a crawl and travelling in to Manchester this afternoon was not much fun either.

In the garden first thing 12 Blackbirds were roosting. Just before I left for work 2 male Bramblings came down to feed with approx 15 Chaffinches.

After leaving Middleton this afternoon I decided to head for home instead of going back to work for half an hour or so. This gave me an opportunity to catch a quick look at Waterworks Lane. I had a nice chat with Pete from Haydock who runs the St Helens birding website - link below.

At Waterworks Lane the finches seemed to be in a feeding frenzy - lots of birds and all were very agitated. Approx 70 Chaffinches were present with 3 Bramblings (2 males and a female), 18 Yellowhammers, 4 Reed Buntings and 6 Tree Sparrows.

A male Sparrowhawk put in a brief apperance and then departed empty-taloned! A covey of 7 Grey Partridges turned up to feed and 2 Fieldfares flew into the field nr Highfield Farm which seems to be hidden from view. I suspect the local flock of Fieldfares spends quite a bit of time in this field.

Then all of a sudden a male Kestrel appeared from nowehere and struck at one of the finches on the ground. He missed but pandemonium ensued. Finches flew in all directions and the GP's also spooked and flew into dead bracken by the hedge. Unfortunately 2 pairs of GP's were already in there and a partridge fight broke out. The 2 pairs were evicted and went their separate ways - unfortuneately no finches remained in view.
