Thursday 9th June
A day to forget today. Work was crap for a starter. I then, on the spur of the moment, decided to go and twitch the White-throated Robin. When I arrived the bird hadn’t been seen for over two and a half hours and didn’t reappear either. At least I had some good company to spend the time with as Sid and Pete Welch turned up shortly after me. Pete was eager to abort and head off to Wykeham and eventually, when we all decided the little bugger wasn’t going to show, he and Sid headed off to see Turtle Doves and Nightjars. I decided to go to Saltholme to see the Spoonbills. When I arrived the RSPB reserve was shut and they lock the gates! I don’t understand why the RSPB think that birds keep office hours? Anyway when I was driving away I noticed a large white blob in the pool near the road so I stopped in a nearby laybye and got the scope out – it was one of the Spoonbills. The light was awful and I could see sod all else so I watched this magnificent bird for a while and headed off to a hotel.
On the way home I realised the transporter bridge was nearby so I took the car across the river on it. I know, I’m sad but I did like Auf Wiedersehen Pet!
Friday 10th June
A long day at work followed by a 4 hour slog home from the Midlands courtesy of congestion and various accidents. I called in at HGF late evening. Nothing much to report – the Great Crested Grebe continues to incubate and the other two nests appear to be flattened again with a Mallard sitting on one. Headed north to the van then.
