Canada Geese family and pair of Common Terns at Moat Lane pools plus Tree Sparrow on Rixton Moss
14th June
Little Ringed Plover at HGF this morning – plus the usual stuff. A pattern of the last few days is two pairs of Great Crested Grebes are building nests each day only to see them flattened and then to start again. Same today. Went to Rixton this afternoon and saw out of the corner of my eye one of the Common Terns drift over the corner of Moat Lane pool 1. On a hunch I wandered over to the back of the pool to scan the blind side of the island and was really chuffed to find the other tern incubating there! They are having another go. I had thought they had buggered off because I hadn’t seen either bird in the last few visits. Three Little Ringed Plovers were also on the pools. By the tip I found an adult Tree Sparrow perched on a fence with two juveniles in tow.
15th June
Usual stuff at HGF early on plus a feeding frenzy of around 170 Swifts over the fields by Midhops. Later on in the day I headed off down to Milton Keynes where I was working the next day. On the way I had to divert off the motorway which was shut and go hedging and ditching. Somewhere I found a Red Kite but I haven’t a clue whether that was good or not because I had no idea where I was!
Late evening I had a wander around Paxton Pits. I saw two Nightingales flitting around but heard none – I suspect they are all silent now. There were quite a few singing Garden Warblers plus a Cuckoo and various other decent birds. I managed a quick walk before the heavens opened and I retreated back to my hotel.
