Back on Anglesey

Rock Pipits, Trearddur Bay

9th September

Started the day with an early morning trip in the drizzle to HGF. A couple of Meadow Pipits flew up out of the south field, along with a Skylark and 31 Collared Doves. On the pool the teal is still present along with the half dozen Little Grebes and the usual array of fauna. A handful of House Martins and Swallows were feeding over the water. A Chiffchaff sang briefly from the south hedge and a Buzzard was loitering around Midhops, and that was about it. I didn’t have long to stay there as I had to work the morning and then we were leaving for a holiday.

Early afternoon I watched a Sparrowhawk fly over the garden whilst being mobbed by corvids. Just before setting off towards North Wales I heard about the Grey Phalarope at Pennington Flash. Cue “slight” diversion – the bird was distant and tucked in amongst the reeds but gave good views through the scope. Then we were off.

For the first time in a few years we were back in Anglesey – a place we frequently used to holiday in. I always feel, in some strange way, that I have arrived home when I cross the Menai Bridge. Perhaps I was Welsh in a previous life? Disturbing thought.

We rented a cottage opposite one of the little inlets in Trearddur Bay – one we have been to previously. It’s been improved since our last visit with a purpose built games room above the garage with a proper pool table and also a table football game plus stunning views out over the bay!

In the evening we took Bill for a walk around the inlets opposite. There is a sprawling, grey, stone house here perched on top of a small cliff. It always looks gloomy even in bright sunlight and we long ago nicknamed it the haunted house. The little coves around here are usually good for something though and the first birds spotted were a group of six Rock Pipits which were sifting through the seaweed on the shore. Also here was a Grey heron, a Redshank and 18 Turnstones while a couple of Ravens drifted low overhead (common here). We were just strolling around and generally watching the Rock Pipits which had a foraging circuit around the cove. Good to be back!
