"Haunted House", Trearddur Bay
Choughs, Southstack
10th September
Today was not a birding day. I didn’t crawl out of bed until late morning anyway – I was about at the end of my tether and absolutely knackered before the holiday started. We ended up just driving around a bit and then playing pool etc in the games room.
The only birds seen today were at Breakwater Country Park (Karen likes to feed the ducks here). Of note were 8 Gannets fishing just off shore (6 adults and 2 juveniles) while 30-40 House Martins buzzed around the cliffs. As we passed South Stack on the way back a couple of Choughs were seen.
11th September
Managed to get out of bed half an hour earlier than yesterday – must be improving! Again a day of just messing around and no attempt really at birding. Going past Holyhead Harbour I stopped and scrutinised the water – I eventually found a winter-plumaged Black Guillemot hiding among the yachts. At Penrhos Coastal Park (good for walking Bill) a few migrating hirundines contained a Sand Martin. Early afternoon in the strong winds that heralded the approach of Hurricane Katia I watched 10 Choughs flitting around at South Stack – visibility was poor.
Later on I took Bill for a wander by the haunted house back at Trearddur Bay. I spent a wile just watching birds – mainly the Rock Pipits (now numbering 11) which were still engrossed in their foraging circuit and a Wheatear on the haunted house lawn. A small flock f 17 Linnets were flitting around a horse paddock opposite and the pair of Ravens were hanging around nearby.
