Herring Gulls, Beaumaris
Great Black-backed Gull, Red-breasted Merganser and Sandwich Terns all at Red Wharf Bay
12th September
This morning the winds really picked up and Trearddur Bay at high tide was spectacular. Standing upright and not getting wet were somewhat problematic. A single raven flew over while we stood watching the waves crashing over the rocks and anything else that happened to be in the vicinity. In one of the more sheltered coves (relative term today) I spotted a couple of Shags fishing – later in the afternoon four were present plus a single Sandwich Tern.
In between these two visits we spent a few hours at Red Wharf Bay. Karen ordered the coffees while I, having spotted some birds in the channel, wandered off for a “quick minute” to see what they were. The birds were in fact 17 Sandwich Terns, a Common Tern, a Great Black-backed Gull and three Red-breasted Mergansers. I watched the terns fishing in the channel and then mooching about on the sand bank. By the time I had finished watching this lot my coffee had disappeared.....
